      Tom Halliburton, Senior Pastor

Tom came to McKendree Church as Senior Pastor in June of 2005.  Prior to his appointment here, Tom was the District Superintendent in Cookeville for four years, and before that, he served as pastor at Livingston First UMC for ten years.  In addition to preaching at New Wine Fellowship and the Traditional Service, Tom sees his responsibilities as equipping the laity and staff to do ministry, leading the church to discipleship, and growing the Kingdom.

Tom’s academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland and a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University.

Having grown up in the Inglewood area of Nashville, Tom attended Isaac Litton High School and was a member of Inglewood United Methodist Church.  His determination in life is to be nothing more than a servant of God.

Tom enjoys seeing lives changed and watching as God reaches out in the downtown neighborhood for the lost.  He says McKendree is constantly seeking ways to maintain open relationships with the downtown area.  Tom is asking God to lead us into becoming a regional church.

His hobbies include golf, fishing, and being with his dogs.  He is devoted to his wife Gayle.

      Kevin Sparkman, Evangelism Coordinator

New staff member Kevin Sparkman comes to McKendree as a product of New Wine Fellowship. "Through the ministry of New Wine I instantly fostered a burden to see Nashville as a city living for Christ. Our God is big - completely selling ourselves out to this call will only show a glimpse of what He can do!"

Kevin oversees the various aspects of outreach to the community through the ministries and facilities of New Wine and McKendree. He also administrates event publicity for these entities and manages content for the many forms of New Wine and McKendree online and through other forms of media.

Before going into full-time ministry, Kevin was most recently owner of Exit 3 Entertainment, Inc. and general manager of Beatmart Recordings.

Kathy’s educational background includes an Associate of Arts degree in Vocal Music from Lonmorris College, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Education from Centenary College, and a Master of Arts from Scarritt Graduate School.  She has served churches in Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee and served on the Board of Diaconal Ministries as a member and as Secretary.  Kathy is the past president of the Tennessee Conference Chapter of Christian Educators Fellowship.

When asked what she likes most about her job – “Hands down, it’s the people.  They have a clear concept of themselves as ministers.”  She says McKendree has always been good about taking care of its own, but it is exciting to see them reach beyond the walls.  “They are constantly redefining ‘ministry’ to meet the needs of the members and community.”

Kathy enjoys family time with husband Bill and son Daniel.

      Bill Maul, Organist

Leading McKendree worship in song is our organist and acting choir director, Bill Maul.  Work in the office is often accompanied by the sounds of the pipe organ as Bill prepares for Sundays.  Bill sees himself as part of the worship team by providing suitable and meaningful music for the 11:00 a.m. service.  “I enjoy the freedom to do all genres of music, do alternate harmonies and intros to hymns, and having my work appreciated.”

Bill’s credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Sacred Music from Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania and a Master of Arts in Church Music Performance from Scarritt College in Nashville.

Bill sees God working through the McKendree congregation’s caring attitude and the church’s outreach work through programs such as Room in the Inn.

History:

A New Country, A New Church!

In 1787 Reverend Benjamin Odgen was appointed by the Baltimore Methodist Conference to be the circuit preacher of the Cumberland Settlement.  One of the churches started on that circuit would become McKendree United Methodist Church.  Since that time, the people and pastors of McKendree have made a Christian witness in downtown Nashville

The Early Years Brought Several Moves

The first church building was located on the southeast corner of what is now the Nashville courthouse square.  This 400-square-foot building was made of stone and had a dirt floor.  The town government donated the land to the church, but by 1807 the town took the land back to use for business houses and the town courthouse.  For a while the church met in homes of different members.  Mr. E.D. Hobbs was the town jailer and a very prominent member of the church.  His home was in the jail, and church services were often held there.  Church members probably thought nothing of hearing and preaching the gospel in the jail.

In 1812 the church moved to what is now Broadway and 7th Avenue (where Hume-Fogg High School now stands).  The auditorium was the largest in town and was used by the Tennessee Legislature between 1813 and 1817.  In 1817 the congregation decided they were “too far away from the center of population” and decided to move closer into town.  In 1818 a new brick church was erected on the corner of Third and Spring Street (now Church Street).  The church covered the entire lot and every available space was used.
By 1830 this location had been outgrown.  It was decided to move again!

Our Present Location

On March 9, 1832, the lot on which McKendree now stands was purchased, and the first building completed in 1833.  Bishop William McKendree dedicated the church on November 23, 1834, and at that time the church was re-named in his honor.  The new church was quite a stately undertaking for its day.  The sanctuary seated 1500 people, and was the largest Methodist Church in the United States at that time.

Two New Churches – Two Fires

During the Civil War the Union Army took over McKendree Church, and converted it into an Army hospital.  The building took much use during the war, and in 1876 the congregation decided to build a new one.  This new building took three years to complete and became known as the “high steeple Gothic church.”  The middle steeple was 230 feet high and the towers on each side rose 130 feet.  This beautiful Gothic church was dedicated January 29, 1879, but its beauty was short-lived.  On Sunday, October 26, of the same year, the church caught fire after the close of the evening service.  The building was completely destroyed, and the cause of the fire was never learned.

The congregation began at once to rebuild their meeting place.  On May 7, 1882, the third church on the present site was dedicated.  It was modeled like the previous church but had more practical features and was in a more Norman-Gothic style.  In June of 1905 plans were made to put in stained-glass windows and renovate the building.  This work had barely begin when on July 4th the church was again devastated by flames.  It is thought that a firecracker accidentally shot inside an open window.  The building burst into flames just after midnight and was again destroyed.

Our Present Building

After much debate the congregation decided to rebuild on the same location.  The cornerstone of the present building was laid on December 10, 1907 and in January of 1910 the church was completed.  It was located further back from the street with a large lawn.  The sanctuary had the first “echo organ” in the South.  The beautiful windows (a combination of stained-glass and art glass), showing scenes from the life of Christ, were installed in 1910.

In 1932 construction on the “education addition” to the rear of the church was begun.  This provided a kitchen and fellowship area, nursery and toddler space and much-needed Sunday School classrooms.  In 1965, it was decided to use the large space in front of the church for the building of an addition to provide room for the growing needs of the church.  This four-floor addition contains classroom space, a large fellowship hall, kitchen, drama facilities, and staff offices.  In general design, the front of the new addition resembles the face of the old building.  It presents a beautiful symbol of the Christian faith at the center of a great city.

The Christian Life Center

In 1983 McKendree Church bought the parking garage at the rear of the building from a downtown department store that was going out of business.  In 1988, the congregation purchased the lot on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Commerce Street for the purpose of building a Christian Life Center.  Completed in March of 1990, it has six floors, and includes a basement parking area, the McKendree Day Care, office space, a gymnasium and a rooftop garden.

What Does the Future Hold?

Only God knows the plans He has for the future of McKendree United Methodist Church.  The congregation is committed to ministry in Nashville, especially in the downtown area.  McKendree Church may be old in age, but we are young at heart!  We truly want to minister the love of Jesus Christ and share His Good News.  We trust that our Faith in Action will bring many more years of active ministry in the heart of the city!
